If you were going to make an web site with original content using both a blog and or maybe a forum is it essential that the domain name be related to it?

I ask this because I have a few domain names that are 10-12 years old.

I have never used them for anything before and they don't relate to anything that would be on my site.

Also if I were to buy a domain name now would it be excluded to anything any other sites that have been around for a while?

Meaning if its a few days old is it impossible to get anything like adwords or clickbank, etc?

Thanks

I think the important thing here is to make sure that your website as juicy unique content. I would think google would treat an unrelated domain name similarly to a branded domain. Google doesn't know what a brand means, untill there is alot of content generated around the brand? I could be wrong, but that's what I'm thinking.

At the end it is the content of your website that will determine how relevant it is. So as mentioned by SolidTactics, focus on content. Choose a niche and build content. You would be better off applying and getting approved for adsense after a month or two. This way if your site starts getting some traffic + unique content and a niche that is allowed by adsense (minus adult/warez/gambling) you could get the approval.
