Question about domain backlink profile

I found an expired domain with around 500 backlinks that don't seem like spam links. Most of these links don't point to the homepage, but to some other page within the site that has been active on that domain.

When I make my own site, what will happen to those links? Will it have a bad SEO effect that most of the domain backlinks are pointing nowhere?

It's highly recommended you re-create old pages that are still powered by valuable links or 301 them internally to most relevant pages of your new site:

- Using the old content is not a good idea (either rewrite it or use brand new content that talks about the same thing)
- When dealing with a gibberish URL like domain.com/?=page1aboutsocial-marketing#$% it's best to just 301 it to a new page like domain.com/social-marketing/

So the rule of thumb is to re-create pages that don't have a good match on your new site (and use them to link to your money pages internally) and 301 redirect the rest.

The end goal is to avoid 404s and preserve as much of the old link juice as possible.

You can use Best by links from Ahrefs to identify the most popular old URLs which are worth re-creating or redirecting
