Question about "combining" keywords

Hey so I tried briefly looking through the forums archives and I'm still a bit stormy on this topic.

Let's say I'm targeting this two-word keyphrase: "Doggy Joggy" because it has a pretty low comp of 0.20 (not sure if that's low btw :D). And let's say I did some long tail research and found out that "Doggy Joggy Voggy Boggy" has a lower search volume, but a lower comp of 0.04.

If I optimized for "Doggy Joggy Voggy Boggy" would it also optimize for "Doggy Joggy"? Am I hitting two birds with one stone here?

Or can it only be one or the other? Either I'm optimizing for "D J" or "D J V B." Does Google differentiate between the two?

Yes. I learnt a long time ago, pick off the easy shit and the rest follows. These days I prefer to make a content site, watch for the shite keywords coming in, pump them and watch other follow.

Yes, you are.

Do not apply the same keyword density for "D J" and "D J V B" in the same article. Otherwise, you're spamming your content for the "D J" keyword.

I'm like so happy :D.

That means the secret to SEO really is aiming for long-tail because you're secretly also hitting the short-tail keyword too!

Also, I was honestly thinking about optimizing for 2 long-tail keywords in my 3k-word article, so like "D J V B" and "D J X Y" but after reading your super informative post, I'm not gonna do that cuz it's going to fak up "D J" :(. I was just thinking that if i'm going to write a long article, might as well fit as many relevant long-tails in as I can becaue this took some hard work

Try adding more LSI keywords rather than long tails.

It's not really a secret ;) (What mickyfu said : LSI)

Vary some similar meaning words and see for yourself how much the SERPs change (or don't change).

Type your keyword into Google. Then, scroll to the very bottom of the page. You'll find relevant keywords there.

Thanks for all your help guys! Very useful :) and I looked up LSI and it seems a bit challenging to incorporate since you need 2:1 LSI:KW.

How do you guys do your keyword optimization after you get to the 1st page? Can you move on to another keyword or do you need to make another site for that?

My goal was to optimize for one keyword and get to the 1st page with it. . . then I was going to move on to another keyword and get to the 1st page with that. Ofc, all keywords would be related to the niche of my site. But I feel like if this were that easy then people wouldn't be making micro niche sites.
 
If the keywords you want to rank are parts of the same niche then you can include them in the same site. However if they are completely irrelevant I qould suggest you build a second site for your second keyword.

You can optimize for more KWs on the site, so long as they are niche relevant. You begin to build an authority site at that point. MNS are often used to test concepts, test a niche's waters, etc. It's a way to make money with less investment. The real money is in authority sites. I prefer to manage authority sites than a massive network of MNS'.

You can definitely make good money with MNS' as well, but I just feel like MNS' are just waiting to be outranked. When I find a niche that has a MNS in it, I get excited because it's like a neon sign saying "this is probably an easy niche."

The added bonus with an authority site is that you can basically go after any low hanging fruit you want without building any links to it. The obvious difficulty is getting a site to that level. It takes a lot of effort and time to build.

All of this is, of course, my own bias. Find what works for you.
 
Yes. If you start ranking for longer tail terms and get good CTR and dwell time, you can start ranking for the higher search volume terms. So if you rank for A B C D you will start ranking over time A, AB, etc...
 
As some of the comments above have said, you'll pick up other keywords as part of people searching for the long tails. It's safe to conbine but within reasonable quantities, don't go stuffing too many in there.

Yoooooooooo so I totally messed tf up! I thought the BID COMPETITION = KEYWORD COMPETITION.

Unfortunately "D J" turns out to be one of the hardest keywords to rank for because semrush says the keyword difficulty is 87%. . . Other sites say 70%.

now I don't have an ahrefs account, and semrush's kw difficulty seems to be exaggerated. . .

So I was wondering if any of you knew the best FREE sites with the most accurate keyword difficulty assessment. :P I'm planning on plugging the semrush keywords into that site.

None are perfect, but the general consensus seems to be that KWFinder has one of the more accurate difficulty finders. Lucky for you, they allow 3 searches per day for free with no account. It would be better for you to learn a bit more about looking at the serps with other free tools like SEO Quake, Moz Bar etc.

Difficulty scores are nice for comparing keywords to each other, but deriving how hard it is for you to rank for a keyword (as opposed to one keyword just being harder than another) takes a bit of time, testing and experience. Don't lean too much on difficulty scores.

Yes. As you familiarize yourself more with the top competitors in a niche, the domain metrics, the search snippet optimizations, etc. You'll begin to get a feel for whether a niche looks like it is difficult or not. You'll be able to tell if the competitors that are ranking were targeting that keyword and optimizing for it, or if they just happened to mention it, and that's the best resource Google was able to find, etc.

Some niches are so poorly under-served that strong sites rank simply because they mention a relevant phrase in the body text. A weak site with some good optimization can outrank a strong site if Google deems it more relevant. That's where expertise will trump a keyword difficulty score. A keyword difficulty score will throw out perfectly good keywords with strong domains ranking because they have trouble accounting for the value of relevance.

i like that attittude, the problem is when niche is actually doomed by other authority sites that have already 300 articles with length of 2k and solid backlinking, ranking done to the site.


writing so much is a pain, especially if you dont know anything about the niche and just attempt to copywrite in such humongous volume
