I just saw I have 83% bounce rate how can I get it lower, what should I do ?

bounce rate means low user engagement / retention

To lower the bounce rate you obviously want people to interact with your site more, and to do this you can...

a) create internal links from the landing page to other pages that might be of interest to your visitors (needless to say that if you want them to click on those links both the anchor text and the page the anchor text points to need to be very useful and relevant to the content that your visitors have just read, otherwise they'll not click on those links);

b) offer them something valuable for free (a report, software, guide, tips, discount, etc...) to make them subscribe to your newsletter / email list;

c) put a poll / quiz on the landing page (if it makes sense and doesn't bother your visitors) and ask them to take it;

d) add a "related posts" widget (if you're on Wordpress there are dozens of such plugins, although other CMS might have this capability, too) on the landing page so that people can click on one of those related posts to read more of the same stuff;

e) create controversial content and ask them to leave a comment to speak up their minds on this controversial content... although, if the content is controversial they will most likely want to leave a comment anyway to voice their anger / frustration / bias / whatever...

f) add a "read more..." link at the bottom of the article that takes them to another page / post of your website where they can (obviously) read more on the same topic :)

In general, make your content better and engage with your visitors more if you want to lower the bounce rate... IF you care about this metric that is. Because I've seen sites with 96% bounce rate making a killing in terms of revenue, so I don't consider this metric to be very important, despite of what experts say. But, if you want to care about it, follow the tips I gave you above and you'll lower it for sure...

Use Quality Content and Install Bounce rate Plugin

Plugin is not available for download anymore any alternatives to download? Also what does it exactly do?
It retriggers the google analytics code in the background, probably a black hat technique for which google would have punished sites using it.
You can check the description below:

Fake” bounces are caused by a user not having a second interaction with your page, so they don’t trigger that second data point to measure the time they spent on site. What if you could force an interaction behind the scenes to get that second data point without affecting the user’s experience on your page? That’s what this plugin does.

Reduce Bounce Rate

This plugin is extremely simple. Essentially, all it does is re-triggers the Google Analytics tracking code you use on your WordPress site every ten second. Any user that has been on your page for longer than ten second gets a second data point, or a third, or fourth, or as many as they have been sitting on your site. You don’t have to use the default ten second data point, either. You can choose to have it trigger more or less often in the settings page.

From the user’s perspective, nothing is changing, except maybe a slight browser indication that something is loading. You’ve probably seen this before, actually; when you’re idle on a page and you see the favicon reload abruptly, despite you having done nothing. It’s just an indication that some script or another executed, but it doesn’t refresh the page or otherwise disrupt browsing.

You might wonder if this is kosher with Google. After all, they have a history of nuking anything that doesn’t quite mesh with their idea of how metrics should be measured. The fact is, though, Google understands that the “satisfied user bounce” is a real metric problem. In fact, they actually published a blog post back in 2012 with similar code you can implement to execute this timed refresh yourself. Google is certainly not going to punish you for using a technique they promoted themselves.

The plugin is completely free, no weird fermium options or paid plans or time limits. It has a relatively low number of users, only in the 10,000 range, and they only have 40 reviews as of this writing, but the majority of them are positive. There are some minor indications that this script might not play nicely with some other JavaScript code you might have on your site, so it’s worthwhile to test this before you implement it site-wide.

Just keep in mind that this plugin just makes your analytics more accurate. It “decreases bounce rate” by simply accurately measuring which people bounced and which people didn’t. If your bounce rate is still high, you have other options as well.

If you want to lower your bounce rate, one of the fastest ways to do it is to paginate your post.

You can easily find the WordPress tags to do this, there are even dedicated WordPress plugins that would help you paginate easily.

Another way you can reduce bounce rate involves adding pictures, diagrams or even videos to your content.

But the most effective way to reduce bounce rate is to write content with a lot of hooks or other sales copywriting tricks that ensure the reader will keep reading your content.

Don't just lay out the answer in a very small easy to identify spot.

Chop up the answer, drill deep, discuss different parts of the answer, and write in a very interesting and attention grabbing way.

This of course involves using headings as well as making certain promises at the beginning of each section.

Look at your content as a form of advertising.

Don't be "salsey" but use these copywriting tricks to keep the reader's attention.

If you need tips and tricks on how to do this, read the content of Brian Dean's blog backlinko.com.

Pay attention to how the posts are structured.

Look at how he uses headings.

He writes in such a way that you will more unlikely stay glued to his pages.

I'm not sure how such a writing style would apply to different niches but it's definitely worth exploring.
