Question about anchor text..

Ok, this might be a noobish question but anyway..

When analyzing anchor text should the percentage be calculated for each KW per page or to the domain itself?

I ask because most backlink checkers I have used give the total backlinks to the domain itself so my percentage of exact match anchor text is much lower than if i look at the individual page..

You are getting sucked into worthless calculations my friend....anything you calculate (even if its 100% correct) will only count for a fraction of the (700 plus) elements Google is measuring in their algo. to make sure when we search for Viagra, we actually find it.

Well I know there's a lot more to it than just anchor text but surely it's important?

I'm trying to figure out what happened to my sites when penguin 2.1 waddled along and slapped them off the face of the web so I thought it would be helpful to analyze the anchor text usage to see if I can find any sort of pattern..

Get your anchor text percentage wrong and let's see how well you rank.
 
I have seen sites like iqseo.net ranking on the first page for "seo services" with no anchor diversity. How about that for a reason to calculate your anchor density ?
 
Majestic SEO site explorer can provide that type of reports, insert the URL at their checker and make sure to select the URL option beneath where you typed your link
 
You are thinking too much into it. As long as you diversify it as much as possible on the domain and pages you will be fine.

Many older, authoritative sites seem to be kinda "grandfathered" when it comes to anchor text diversity. That being said, the domain you just mentioned has 2M+ backlinks and the anchor text profile is horrible. Most links also seem to have been built recently. Also, it now redirects to their Twitter page and they've just regged iq-seo.net instead. Something tells me they're more blackhat than most of us here. :)
 
That is a perfect example of churn and burn. Those previously had a youtube video which they ranked on first page for the same keyword not they went on to rank their own website. So the whole anchor text thing seems like a joke when you look at these guys. Check out the viagra niche and you will find site which have 100% do follow links with only 1 anchor text and boy do they rank.

@ OP Like some one else said don't try o over analyze things. How are you planning to market this iste? Pure blackhat or pure white hat. If it's an authority site majority of your anchor text should be generic keywords, get links from good quality pages and do good one page SEO.

Thanks, yeah I take the point about getting caught up with analysis, however I'm the kind of person who likes to understand the reasons for everything i do.. At the moment I'm trying to figure out why I got slapped by penguin and my search led me to anchor text.. It was a 4 year old domain that was steadily climbing for all keywords but clearly something in the link profile tripped penguin. I just want to make sure I do it right this time you know?

If a high percentage of your site's incoming links include keyword-rich anchor text, especially if the keywords are identical, Google?s algorithms are going to consider the site to have been heavily optimized and thus decide that the link graph doesn?t accurately reflect the quality of the site, leading to a discounting of those links and a drop in SERP position.
