Question about analyzing competence

Just got into SEO about a week ago, i've read and done some things in my website and really learned so much about not letting the keyword tool do your thinking, etc. However i still don't get the page analyzis, hope you guys can give me a hand with it.

My main project is to do local SEO to dentists in a lot of areas, i'm focusing on knowing how to rank just for one area at the moment. I've analyzed the competition and there is no manual SEO done so far. However, pages that rank to the first page are directories (pages like: http://www.dentistas.com.mx/), this is where i have doubts:

- Analyzing the pages with majestic i've noticed they have 0 backlinks to this specific keyword page, but 27,000 backlinks in general.

Is it a stupid idea to try to rank ? or is it easier because that specific page associated to the keyword has 0 backlinks? that's the part where i'm confused.

Not a stupid idea to try and rank. As you've mentioned the directories are ranking due to the overall domain authority which is common. While it won't be a case of just throwing up a site, a little bit of on page and you will be there, it shouldn't be to difficult dependent on what you intend to do, budget etc.

put your keyword in quote "keyword" and search, analyze top 10 listings if it has the exact keyword in title and URL.
if yes, tough to rank but still doable. don't have any authority sites in top 10.

you also need to analyze these 27k backlinks (of course nto each and every) but overall authority of those backlinks and domain authority of those domains etc.
I look for anything less than 30 is rankable to me for such seo projects.

Thank you guys, based on what you said i think it is not suitable for my goals to try to outrank those directories at the moment. Guess my first mistake on SEO was done lol.

I have a clearer vision now on how to research keywords and analyze the competition, i didn't have the DA in mind, i was such a fool.
