Question about ahrefs.com

When I'm checking competitors backlinks I go to ahrefs site to scan the backlinks, also almost always I'm in the game of ranking low competition keywords so I figured a site like this would do for most of my research.

So when I check a site on ahrefs and I see lets say 10 backlinks showing does that mean that this site is in large part ranking where-ever it is ranking because of these 10 backlinks? I have never really used any other site for this so I don't know how accurate it really is or what not.

i use ahrefs too though the free plan..i think it for real considering other things i see on the stats of my site
 
It just confuses me when I check other sites that are one the first page of Google and they have 0 backlinks or very little and I don't get how they are there.

Ever heard of on-page SEO ?
 
301'd links don't show up in ahrefs. Your competitor might be having one or more of powerful 301'd links.
