Question about 301 redirect

I have 2 sites ranking on page one in google for a keyword.

Site 1 is ranking 1st
Site 2 is ranking 4th

If I do a 301 redirect from Site 2 to Site 1 will Site 2 lose it's position in the serps?

I would like to know this too. I think it will because 301 would tell SE crawlers than site has moved permanently to a new URL, which in this case is site 1. So it doesn't make sense for site 2 to still rank for its keyword.

Anyone who has experience with this?

Yes once you 301 a site, it will lose it's rank and pass on the link authority to the 301 target. It may take days, weeks, or more than a month...but the 301 site will fall off the SERPS

yes site 2 will loss it's position. Not only postion, but it will deindex in 1 to 2 weeks.

As you are telling google, you want site 1 only, and all link juice on site 2 will pass to site 1

I did it. Site that i redirect , it lose position then google deindex it and rank site 1.

OOPS: i just notice, its old thread, i was searching 301 redirect and post comment on it. anyway, it may help some one.

As soon Google discover 301 status on your site 2, it will redirect everything (traffic and crawlers) on your site 1...
Although, results of site 2 may appear in search results but on clicking the results traffic will be redirected to site 1.

I got my exact rankings back within 1 month after 301 redirect from my blogspot.com subdomain to custom domain.

Is there a way to 301 redirect all pages of site1.com to site2.com? (so site1.com/abc will still redirect to the homepage at site2.com)

So you want all pages from the old site to redirect just to the new site home page?

if so put this in the .htaccess file on the old site:


Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newsitegoeshere.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Hm, it is redirecting the homepage correctly but is still redirecting site1.com/page.html to its equivalent site2.com/page.html

Try this code, see if it works better:


Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.newsitegoeshere.com/$1 [R=301,L]
