Quality Content, Traffic but no money

Ok I will switch one of the ads to text, but that was against google's recommendation. I don't want to add more than 3 large banners to the front page as it will start to look spammy.

Anyone know where I can get background ads? I think that could work with my site design.

First of all you have wrong niche for adsense. You can use adsense but you need massive traffic to make any money with it.
Ad placements are wrong.
And you have so many distractions on your site (which is good for user/visitor experience) which draws attention from ads.

First, your site is aesthetically pleasing, so you definitely have that right. I think it's really ad placement which is killing your clicks. Try adding an ad block at the end of your content or at the top of it, or you can try selling ad space. I am sure selling ad space would bring in more than the 40 cents you're making a day with 20k visitors a month.
