I wanted to find out the best ways to check out competing websites.

For example if I want to set up a website targeting keywords "deer hunting stuff". How would I check what it would take to out rank the current leader when searching the keywords.

I know there are a lot of factors. I am looking for a way to get an idea or what it would take.

the free version of traffic travis (google it) would probably help you out.

You could use the free Firefox addon SeoQuake

-Check the first ten search results of the researched keyword in Google:
--Backlinks <=> PR
---He has 100-PR1 and 10-PR3 Backlinks? => get 101-PR1 and 11-PR3
--Keyword in title? NO=good
--Keyword in URL? NO=good
--Keyword in Domain? NO=good
--and so on

Or get and use Market Samurai, which makes it faster

That's exactly what I was looking for. Does that addon check what rank the back links are our does that get done separately?

Listen, I'm doing on semrush, for me it is very convenient - all the competitors are clearly visible, including their words. According to a list of similar words can be found, so I just use only it, in other services there is no necessity

Traffictravis and marketsamurai is best to find competition.

There are many ways of doing it. Google the keyword and analyse the top 10 results that are on the first page.

Simply you can type the keyword in the Google search bar and look at what the websites are doing which show up on the top page. Try can copy what they are doing and then look for areas of improvement and go for it.
