I am getting a toolbar made for my site and I already plan on making money through search through it. I have also heard you can add your affiliate cookies to the bar for different programs so that if the user stumbles across the net and happens to purchase at the site, as long as the toolbar is up, your tracking code is present so you would receive a conversion.

It almost seems like an urban legend because I have heard talk about it from different people but cannot find any relevant info on the net.

How do I do this? Are there any downsides to doing this? Thanks!

I am not too concerned with if its 100% effective or not and id rather not be ad jacking or at least purposely, because I will have like 10,000+ people with the toolbar so I don't need to be too stingy with it.
