Directories are listings on different niches like Pets, Education, Auto etc.
You put a description and a link to y our website.
These kind of sites used to be great for SEO a few year ago, but today they are good only for diversification of a backlink profile, not much weight

Directories are just pages that list a listing for a particular theme/subject. They are something like a search engine - only smaller and much more limited in its functionality.
They are still a good source of link, just that you will need to vet the directories and make sure they are good enough in terms of their metrics.
Directories are good in the aspect that they have proper categories for each subject, thus this gives relevance to the listing and the link juice back to your site.
