Hi All,
One of the keyword I am targeting on my site is of "best of " type and is currently ranking on page 3. Here are some metrics:

Keyword: "Best of..."
Ahref KD: 17
Volume: 5400
"inurl" count: 177 - exact match search using inurl:"best of .."
"intitle" count: 171
Site: Started in Dec 2019 on an expired domain
Ahref site DR: 36
Current rank: 31-35

I have done onpage and internal linking as per backlinko suggestions.

I am thinking of buying guest posts/niche edits to push it to page 1 - not #1, just page 1 for now. My questions?

1) How many posts should I target to buy?
2) Should I look for 1 high RD (1000+) post or multiple (5) medium RD (300+) posts?

Please answer if you have experience ranking in such keywords.

You shoul choose 2) muliple (5) ect...

Next question: What number would be good - 2, 5, 10 posts? Just trying to get an idea of the number of posts required so that I can plan my budget.

Anyone else? Can really use some advice.

First, do pillow links before going for PBN or Niche edits. 10 PBN is good enough to start the game. Don't go for 10 for all a sudden.
Week 1 - Pillow Links
Week 2- 2 PBN
Week 3 - 3 PBN
Week 4 - 5 PBN
See the results first then you can move for niche edits.
Buy Tier 1 - 20 to 60 RD Niche edits 3 Links
Then go for Tier 2 and Tire 3 1000+ all those stuff
Along with that do Social Signals as well. To stay on the safe side.

This might take some time but worth it.

Guest posts number depends on how easy or difficult the keyword is make sure they’re high dr ones and have organic traffic and then shoot some pbns on them to see nice rank boosts

Pillow links are the links that help you to dilute the concentrated anchors. These links diversify your keywords to the site as natural as possible. Those links won't help to rank on the top of the SERP's. But they sure help you in the long run.
