purchasing an expired high authority site with spammy backlinks

What are the drawbacks of purchasing an expired domain with a large DR when it has thousands of backlinks that are very spam-like? I assumed that having high authority would be better than no authority.

I'm not sure i understand why a spammed domain is bad. I want to create a PBN and I'm wondering why this domain has a high DR

How do I say it?
If you want spam then go ahead and buy it... there's a reason why it's available.
Do you want spam or quality?
Don't forget that many spammed domains have google penalties so you won't be able to rank those domains.

By larger authority, you mean high DA or DR.

These are third party metrics. Google does not care about them.

It is very easy to get high DA or DR using spam links and other techniques.

So if expired domain has spammy links, it is of no value.

Quality expired domains are difficult to find.

Spammy links are consideres as red flag. If the previous owner has dropped the domain there is a great chance that it lost all traffic and got google penalty.

Host to lift the penalty?

You can buy such domains, add some content and than add to webmaster tools. If it shows manual penalty, tell you are new owner. In order to lift the ban content should be different, otherwise you won't succeed.
+ I doubt domain will keep the link juice but worth trying.
