To be clear, when using VPN internet provider does not know what sites you are visiting, also sites you are visiting do not know where you coming from.
When using proxies, sites you visiting do not know where you coming from, but internet provider knows what sites you visit. Is this correct?

Yes, but your provider sees that you are connected to VPN, and sites see the country you connected to via VPN

Your provider does not see what sites you visit, but the proxy server provider sees everything, many services collect logs
 
It all depends on your needs. For what purposes do you need a VPN and for which proxies?
