Support just said that they blocked my account becouse i break TOS. Thats all

I'm quite surprised to hear that your ProtonMail is under investigation and has been shut down. I've never encountered a situation like this before either.

So I know a lot of people on here use protonmail because it's very easy to create accounts there and many of them.
I myself have a hundred or so just to use for signing up at places that ask for email verification etc.

One of my protonmail emails however was shut down. I don't know when. I hadn't logged into it for probably 1-2 years.
I got a message when I tried to login and I couldn't get a screenshot of it as it disappears after 2 seconds but I read something
like, "the account is under investigation from Swiss law .... blah blah blah".

It seems like wherever I used that protonmail got reported by people and protonmail took it upon themselves to shut it down

Now I don't know if this message is common or if they are seriously doing some kind of investigation on my email account.
Just wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen to your protonmail email too?
Yes, this has happened to me too

I am seeing this message.

This account is under investigation for breach of the Swiss criminal code. Under Swiss law,
in criminal cases, we may be obliged to comply with law enforcement requests upon receiving
a judicial order. If you are the account holder, you can reach us at [email protected] for more information

I just had the same thing happen..did it say criminal? But also it was shut down for awhile with that message..so is under investigation meaning just that the account is disabled

What were you guys using the email for? Did you share it somewhere online?

Protonmail is not to be trusted imo. They lied multiple times, and they cooperated with Europol in the past for pretty dumb things, recently they handed over the data of some French activist because he skipped school or something like that.
Its one thing to cooperate with police when needed, its another thing to lie about not storing IPs and bunch of things and then acting like nothing happened when you gave that same info to authorities.
They are definitely a suspicious company.

I dont think you understand the difference between anonymous vs privacy.

I do understand it, but they clearly stated that they do not log IPs before, and it turned out that they did log it. My concern is not privacy here specifically but the fact that they lied. What else are they lying about?

I signed up on tor do you think that gives them my IP..I only sent one message nothing illegal..but maybe a suspicious email recipient and they put my account under investigation. The next day any thoughts or just accept it as a blocked account

you are fine, they probably just dont like tor or something dumb like that, not even google will block your account because of a "suspicious recipient", but if its really something like that it just confirms my point that proton is just acting too weird

Yes that's what I was concluding..so investigation is a in house term that their team does for account violations on there end..thank you for your input..

Hi everyone.
I have exactly the same problem that @oatmeal , @miglywigly29 , @nomaam123 , @ali52677 & @cassharw ... I saw yesterday that my 2 protonmail linked accounts was disabled with the message "
"This account is under investigation for breach of the Swiss criminal code. Under Swiss law, in criminal cases, we may obliged to comply with law enforcement requests upon receiving a judicial order."
I totally don't know what kind of crime it is, but I have written to Protonmail and they have blocked me again. I am very scared. I have no problem if Protonmail gives my IP or if I have to give them my personal data because I WANT to collaborate, because right now I don't know exactly what is going on.
This message sounds really serious and dangerous (and im not registered in any forum or web illegal or send anything illegal!). I don't know if I have to wait days, weeks or months, I don't know if they are suddenly going to warn me or show up at my house... I have no idea what's going on.
Any of you had suffer this? I am truly terrified.
(I know most of the responses will be that "if I didn't do anything wrong, I don't have to worry". But I'm concerned all the same and want to be able to find out what's going on and help. I don't want problems with law! I don't know how to act!).

Has anyone of you been to Switzerland after getting such an email?
I've been to Germany(German police does cooperate with Swiss) months after receiving that notification from protonmail and it was all fine.

For those who want an "secure" email, you can use cock.li.
You can register with TOR, and use it with tor. So just register with TOR, and always ever just use it with TOR so they'll never know your IP.

For the Protonmail thing, it's weird as some say they did almost nothing and just connected, it is maybe just they use TOR and got kind of "blacklisted" with a "wrong" messager(under investigation for criminal bla bla). Also when you check their transparency report, in 2022 "Orders complied with: 5,957"
