Protocol for giving REP

if somebody posts something of value, rep them. repping someone just because they repped you is illogical and somewhat defeats the purpose of the rep system.

I never found Rep option in giveaways, where people giving everything for free..!

I give someone rep if I think they made a good contribution.
i don't expect rep back, and I don't give rep just because someone reps me.
and occasionally I de-rep - if I really disagree with something that someone posted, or I think they are making a contribution that's negative to the community.

I tend to give rep when the person has given me that "wow" effect. More like they have gone above and beyond to help someone.

OP u should a neg rep question too in ur thread....hhahha..lol!

I won't sugar coat this, I neg rep when someone deserves it. Not when an old thread is bumped, or when a stupid question is asked, or even when the user blatantly spams their way to 15 posts. They will get negged for acting like a fool.

I +rep anyone who makes a post I feel was worth reading. If it made me laugh, was useful, or even just seemed like a flashy intro to the forum, it will get a +rep from me. I have also +repped people in the red at times, because I know some of them have been unfairly negged.

I've only been negged once during my stay here, and I know the guy happened to be drunk at the time. :\

This is actually a good point, it's one of the places people really do deserve rep.

I especially give rep for that. We need laughter.

I agree that we all need laughter in this kind of work. I guess the reason I give thanks for that instead of rep is because for me, rep is associated with how valuable a member's input is. In a forum debate for example about the latest update or whatever, my mind seems to put more stock in the opinion of a member who has more rep.

Having said that, you have more rep than me. So there.... Hahaha.:D

At any rate, everyone is entitled to use the rep button as they see fit (provided that it is not abusive)

I actually agree with this, although like I said in my last post I have been known to give rep for something that makes me laugh, I do wish the rep system was stricter than that, so we could tell at a glance who really knows their stuff.

I remember earlier this year when 2011nfl was 1 of around only 6 people in the forum to have more than 3k rep.

I am rather new here, in respect to actually getting involved, learning the protocol and building my own rep along the way. Personally I feel that +rep isn't something that should go full circle, because it's highly unlikely that 2 members would happen to contribute something simultaneously that merits a +rep boomerang.

Just a few minutes ago I received +rep from a Jr Exec VIP, and frankly I feel honored that he found my post worthy of taking such action. Consider this: If I turned around and "handed" him +rep would his level of appreciation/respect for me increase, or would he see me as a "+rep-leech" that actually lowers the quality level of the members here?

I regret that due to my inexperience here, and my failure to READ the rules that relate to each category, I somehow managed to get 2 infractions the very first night I actually spent some time here after deciding this was the place I wanted to be. I admit that at the time I felt OldSalt was just being an OldFart by nailing me for something that "I" felt was not such a big deal. I had a chat with a Jr VIP I met here, and his comment wasn't what I wanted to hear necessarily, but it also established with me that OldSalt did a pretty damm good job of protecting the integrity of this site & the members who were actively involved.
Instead of making a new profile and avoiding -rep before donating, I manned up to OldSalt & bz's decisions and soon thereafter made "Donor" status so I could begin my journey.

The point is getting handed anything that you haven't earned is exactly why Pirate Bay has such a following. If this place was a leech trader's hangout then I would have an infraction free profile, but I would not have met some amazing professionals that I have both received from & given to as well. I apologize for the rambling session, but hopefully some part of it made sense to someone. Thanks to OldSalt & bz too. =)

I guess what confuses me is that when you give rep it says something to the effect of "hopefully you will receive rep back". Not exactly those words, but something close.
That's more about karma, so not that particular member will "hopefully give it back", but the community as a whole.

if you start rep'ing people back, then it becomes a case of how many BHW buddies do you have and not the quality of your posts. People put signatures after rep, but I'd hope it's more to just let me know who appreciated my post than doing it because they expect some back. Leaving your name in a rep comment, with the sole intention of trying to get rep back is an abuse of the rep system IMO.

This thread is going to get heated soon...

The topic has been discussed so many times that it's getting boring but the conclusion of all of the previous threads has been that the system has become almost worthless.

After consistent abuse of both the + and - feature, it really doesn't show whether the person is reputable or not.

At the end of the day, it can't earn you anything so don't worry about it.

You solve my problem or you help the community or you made me laugh will give you REP as simple as that

Yep, it's basically an "attaboy" or "attagirl" for a good share, idea, help or a good joke, I wouldn't read that much more into the system regarding any implied reciprocity.

I have given -rep for a guy who insulted me some days before.. He is senior than me and higher than me in rep, posts etc... At instant, I received negative rep back from him for no reason :(

My current rep prices are:

$5.00 for me to give you +REP
$10.00 for me to -REP that dickhead that gets on your nerves

These prices are negotiable.

j/k
I give +rep to posts that educate, enlighten or entertain me.
I give -rep to plonkers and scammers.
