    Hello fellow BHWers,

I'm writing this thread to ask a question.

Basically the scenario is this: a client asked me to teach him how to do some SEO. I told him that I wouldn't do so but he's very insistent.
I decided to charge him a year's SEO fee in return for giving him a long rundown of various techniques and also products to purchase.

I've decided to request for the fee upfront, but I'm afraid that he'll dispute the payment through Paypal.

What's the best way to protect myself from this? There will be no physical goods involved so I'm quite concerned about chargeback for digital products.

Or could someone suggest alternative payment methods that would protect me from a dispute?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!

PayPal always have the buyer protection so there is not any chance to avoid the dispute. PayPal is the best payment option in the world. If you will get the payment as gift than he also can claim for the unauthorized transaction so there is the risk always

I would suggest you to create the PayPal account with fake information and use it for your Business. You will not get any trouble. If you still want any suggestion with Payment, Add me in Skype or PM me your Skype

create a page with some membership type of stuff there and a PayPal payment button

Add Terms Like "No Refund once membership started"

Once the buyer paid and open a dispute, Tell PayPal that according to the terms he is not liable for any refund or disputes.

Yes, it is true that there is not way you can completely remove the chances for a dispute but remember, you Paypal provides protection for digital goods. I have successfully recovered from disputes many times after selling a website or wordpress theme/plugin to a client and when they intentionally filed a dispute. The major point it communication. Whenever a dispute is filed, respond immediately, both in Paypal resolution section and through email with the buyer. Always try to prove to Paypal that the product was a digital product or just a service that the buyer paid for. You will win the dispute in 80% cases. Best of luck

i dont think there is anything you can do, few day ago i lose dispute it is scam however i sell some service 2 months ago and now guy chargeback money after 2month lol, paypal sent him without questions.. this is the msg from pp

The dispute amount has now been debited from your PayPal account because of the following reason(s):

We did not receive proof of shipment.
In addition, you have been debited a chargeback fee.

If the credit card issuer decides the case in your favor, we will notify you that the payment will be returned to your PayPal account.

I have this habit of telling people I don't want to do anything for who are so insistent that I do something for them to fuck off. Might offend them a bit but you get to use the time for something more productive and save on chargeback fees and stuff.

But then you'll lose the potential revenue that you could have gotten if the client was trustworthy. Such a dilemma, isn't it?

I'd go with my gut, the moment I get the feeling that he might chargeback hes dead to me and its money I'd never make. I'd forget the bad apples and work with the real trustworthy clients, and not ones that I think might be or want to take a chance with. Then again, you could always ask for a bank wire instead of paypal :)

Well the problem is that we're from different countries, so a bank transfer is out of the question.

I sell only digital goods. Unfortunately, there are scammers who open a dispute after receiving their digital goods.

I win 100% if the buyer has not paid with his credit card. Because PayPal does not provide buyer guarantee for digital goods.
Indicate clearly in dispute that you have sold digital goods. You win the PayPal dispute % 99.99

Try to block credit card payments through PayPal if you sell digital goods. :beach2:

And for that is what wire transfer for. Tell him to wire the funds to your bank account.

This is what happens. You should be fine.

And the only reason that you don't win when they pay with a credit card is because the credit card company will almost always put the chargeback through and take it from Paypal. Take a guess if Paypal would be willing to to eat those credit card chargebacks.

If you're charging for the whole year I assume you're going to be charging about 3k or more? Wire transfer fees would be around $45.

Only works if paid with paypal balance, if payment volumes are huge payments will be done wiht paypal, and if the buyer raises a chargeback paypal is going to suck the money out of your account and put it in negative and send you a preformatted apology mail saying they did their best as always and were able to do nothing.

According to Paypal's Help Centre, you can only open a dispute for the following reasons:
With this knowledge, you should know that you need to keep an accurate record of any e-mail exchanges or contact you have with your customer, provide an accurate description of your product, and keep a copy of the receipt and proof that you sent it to your customer.

I frequently do consultancy work - I am assuming you are charging him x thousand - just ask for a direct bank transfer, as Paypal is wholely inappropriate for large sums of money being transferred because of their fees. That is quite a reasonable request to the client - mine have never said no. Equally he cannot get it back.
