this site (x.com) keeps coming up on my google search for local keywords even though they are not local. all other top ranking sites have at most 2k backlinks, and this is the ahrefs results of x.com:

the steep drop is a clear implication of spam backlinks i suppose.
the conclusion is mass spam backlinks also works for local seo purpose.

my attempts at backlinks never came close to 200k. i guess thats why i never saw any success.

There's no proof there.

What made you think that the drop off is due to spammy links?
You know if you launch a service and then run PR and other marketing campaigns then it's normal for you to get so many backlinks at once and then they will fade away as the PR's get all and get deleted.

Spam works for every keyword, not just local SEO keywords. By the way, I don't think the reason for your failure is the low number of backlinks you built. You certainly don't need 200K backlinks to outrank your competitors if you build the right kind of links.

That said, spam works when links are built in volumes, so your theory might be correct. I usually aim for the high numbers while building spammy links but I make sure most of the links I build are do-follow links. If you build mostly do-follow links, you won't need that many links to beat your competitors.

Sorry I have to say this, but you are giving the worst advised ever. High volume of backlinks ( spam ) will maybe rank you, but that kind of rank will stay maybe a week maybe a month but sooner or later google will slap you.

And your recommendation of building only do-follow backlinks is also bad, google will see this and its F* obvious. You need to simulate the natural backlink structure, where there is do-follow, no-follow, high anchor diversity, etc.

The site may or may not have used spam to rank but spam may not even work for all domains. But yes, it continues to deliver results if you have multiple domains from which a few would always start ranking well.
