First of all, work on the articles of your blogs - (They must be catchy for any readers).. After you have solid command of contents viral the contents links in mainly facebook and reddit - as per my experience these 2 are very solid platforms to get solid and real traffic, stumbleupon also works.

Always, keep working on backlinks of your blog, try to get as many as good backlink to your blog, through guest posting, web 2.0s, good forum posting and many more link building techniques.

One more thing, solid images and videos for each post on your blog also attracts the viewers, so keep that in mind as well.

Niche related forums,
Question Answer boards like Yahoo answers, Quora etc.
 
Do signature links in forums if you can, promote on social sites. Maybe do a youtube video to showcase the site.

There's a bunch of ways you can promote a blog - Facebook, Reddit, forums, Twitter, Search Engine Optimization, Pay Per Click, to just name a few. In my opinion, the channel of promotion in large part depends on the topics your blog covers. For example, if you're writing fiction, you're much better off using reddit and facebook than SEO or PPC.
