Really depends on Genre of music
Where most musician fail is not understanding they have to flood the market with there music, I'll give u a marketing summary u might be able to revamp based on hip hop music.
1. Understand your audience you can't market to everyone so it will be broken down into age so lets say today with hip hop you would market towards ages 13 - 29 females & males in the urban area.
2. After it's broken down into age groups you need to break it down into region, it's not like your Universal Music Group here to create a buzz, u need to start by region, lets say your music is good and people like it and your from the south. You might want to promote your music in florida, South Carolina, Georgia create a buzz in there area's and your music will take a life of it's own.
3. Now exactly what material do u need to create a buzz, well one "good music" two u need a international connection to press up some CD's professionally DO NOT press them up in the USA the will bend you over and rape you press them up in china, if u need a contact contact me.
But honestly, that's just the beginning, u need to understand sound scan reports, BDS "Broadcast Data Systems" Barcodes, retain a beast Lawyer to kick down doors for you which will cost u know less then 10k. file a LLC for your publishing then pick a company u wanna run with BMI or ASCAP, understanding the new 360 deal model which will determine if u wanna stay independent or major, recording advances, recoupment, Royalties, Mechanical Royalties etc, I can talk to you for hours about the business of music.
You can hit me up for advice the entertainment industry is another beast of it's own.
