Promoting a "Boring" Company

So you have a client that's in the trades, landscaping, plumbing, shipping & receiving, mechanical parts, etc, type industry.

What are some ways to promote these types of companies using advertising (traditional or digital), social media, or SEO?

When I say "boring", I just mean relative to more typically exciting industries such as fashion, social media influencers, restaurants, consumer tech, marketing agencies, etc.

How would you go about promoting these types of B2B companies?

I'd love to hear your guys' ideas.

I run PPC campaigns for most trade businesses. Google local services ads are killing it right now in a lot of areas.

In my country (Canada), weed is soon to be legal, so that may cause discrimination concerns.

Interesting. So you first generate leads through Google ads? And then you have the client try and convert them, I'm guessing, right.

Correct - if you’re in Canada I’d highly recommend looking into the local services ads - clients are charged per lead and the conversion rate is pretty high. For my regular PPC campaigns I’ll drive the traffic to the site and optimize the landing pages, but ultimately it’s on my clients to close the sell.

Thanks for the insight. Do you utilize social media at all?

Also, how did you go about learning local service ads? Any thought leaders you look up to, or sources of information/guides?

I usually advise against social media for most trades, I do have some clients are feel that they need to be active on there, so I’ll run minimal ads. My thought is if I have a busted pipe in my home or business I’m not going on to Facebook to find a plumber.

There is close to no learning required for the local services ads. Get your client set up and through the verification process and start working on building up their reviews.

Definitely such kind of businesses must be at Local Services Ads. But is a plumbing more boring than fashion? Not sure.

B2B companies should focus more on the SEO and local listings. Once i was into a B2B business and on the traditional approach i dida lot of networking and created a word of mouth, etc it works

Any business is exciting as long as its running good and making money.

Can agree with some of the others in this thread, PPC is the way to go.
I'm doing AdWords management myself for small to medium-sized businesses, and it's working out for local as well as national promotion.
However, I've figured out that for some businesses Bing becomes a valuable option as long as my client is based in the USA/Canada and their business is targeting older people.

PPC is one way.
The other, which is very effective - Craigslist. It has paid listings now, that means that there is so much less spam. Your listings will stand out and get a lot of traffic. The listing costs $5 or $10. Try it one time and you'll see how effective it is.
