Project Management...Any alternatives to Basecamp?

All,

Looking for some software to keep track of where I am up to with all my projects. Have been looking at basecamp (sorry cannot link...google basecamphq )

This looks ideal for what I want but is a monthly fee...

Any members recommend anything else?

This is a good question.

BaseCamp is decent, I used it for years but it quickly becomes disorganized in my opinion.

Many project management tools I've used recently were built from open source WIKI components hosted on corporate intranets. I didn't build them myself, but maybe we can find a stub project available to customize for our own projects.

Just an idea. I feel your pain in a lack of coherent project management tools that a diverse, distributed team can adopt and use effectively.

If you don't mind not having source control, check out 5pmweb. The interface is fantastic. They have weekly specials that will make it $10-20 cheaper a month than Basecamp. I've used both and prefer 5pmweb.

I've used it to manage large outsourced jobs before. Everyone was reluctant to use it at first but quickly fell in love with its simple, effective interface. Perfect for you if you don't need to heavy duty corporate PM software.

Microsoft Project Management is the best I've used by far (can't believe I'm promoting Bill here). The good thing is there is a lot of independent add-ons you can incorporate in it.

Have you checked out ProjectPier, it's a fork of ActiveCollab, and it's open source PHP.

Yeah ActiveCollab is great, you can easily find a version you can download and "test" if you look around.

I personally wouldn't go with any hosted solution, i don't like having my data sitting on other peoples servers.

theres an open source component for joomla called joomlafork its free and not that bad considering...

AVG found a virus in the mindjet download, could just be the crack but beware just in case.

basecamp has a free option too that you can create separate accounts with and link them together with an openid - look for the real small link when signing up (free for 1 project)

also there is activecollab dot com

You should really go for GoPlan. (I can't post links, but just go to google and search).

It's made by Portuguese engineers and it's really good and it's also cheaper than Basecamp.
