When you get a local business client with a relatively new website (less than a year old), how much backlinks should you get when you start building links for them?

Is there some sort of often-used-formula or anything like that?

I'm assuming you don't want to dump thousands and thousands all at once though, right? So what's a good rule of thumb for how much backlinks you get?

The formula depends on the niche, but some general rules would apply...

In the beginning, start with a focus on quality links. Especially for local sites, getting a listing in that city's chamber of commerce website or city's .gov page is a plus.

If you client retails for larger brands, make sure his/her suppliers link to your client's site when possible.

Press releases can help build brand and authority. Good links on news sites, including some majors, will help in developing an authoritative backlink profile.

There are many other things you can do, and I'm sure others could add to this list. Keep in mind this is not about quantity and about quality. Especially for new sites, it is important to develop a trustworthy backlink profile before going BH on the site. Others may disagree, but for a client that is the process I would recommend.

There is no given guideline for how many you should or should not create, what is important is relevance. For instance pretty useless dropping links on a fishing site if your anchor links are about computer monitors.

I suggest article marketing for backlink building and then use articles based on the topic of your site so the links are seen as relevant.

You might want to check out the link in my sig, it offers a pretty good backlink building service here on BHW
