these tools are for tier2s and tier3s only..
these will not help much on the rankings...

i recommend blog post from networks.. not the paid per post ones..

I wonder how much of these services work well in competitve niches? Any results that can be verified in extremely difficult markets?

For competitive key terms you always need authority.

Thus this means, if you don't have a good content / viral strategy, you have to pay for these links monthly xxx-x.xxx$+ depending on your competition / budget.

Aim for domains with a high Page Authority, aswell as Domain & a high trust factor.

Of course, everything else you have to keep natural.

All these link building software you can use for tier2+ as mentioned. It's more about to get a higher domain popularity, but you won't get much trust of it.

Bookmarking, blog post, backlink profile. All links should made by hand.

You should concentrate in manual link building instead of automated ones, Automatic link building/tools only help and worthy for 2nd tier.

Personally, I would stay far away from "programs" or "software" for link building. The risk of getting slapped by Google is high. I suggest taking the safer (and in my opinion) the best route. Manually build your links by hand.

This can be a taunting task, but SEOmoz has some helpful tools if you are a pro member there. It may be well worth it to join for a month just to get access to their tools. You can run reports for a site to find excellent backlink opportunities. Another great tool is Link Prospector. Both of these tools will only give you a list a relevant websites (based on your keywords) to place links on. They don't place the links for you.

The other option is using a link building service that builds links by hand and not with automated software. I know LinkFool builds 100% of their links by hand. I'm sure there are other services that does as well.
