profile backlinks - where to put them?

So I'm wondering where to actually put your anchor'd text backlinks in forum profiles? Sigs? Do they even show in profile? Where is the best place and does it depend on forum board software/type?

signature box, dont put it in website box as you cant have anchor there and it will be direct link. its best to just put in signature box.

some sites allow spiders to see all profile pages, others don't.
