Just came across this tweet and thought asking the community if AI really is a threat to these industries?

Professions that are at risk in the future as AI develops: Driving (buses, cars, etc). Captaining (Pilots, Ships, Tanks), Doctors, Software Developers, Lawyers, Actors.

@ATuringtest how did doctors, lawyers, captains and actors made the list?
 
I don’t think actors will have their profession in risk in the future, drivers definitely will
 
Software Developers
I don't think so. Probably, the easier jobs will be affected; if it indeed gets affected. For example, web development is already affected thanks to the page builders (although it's not AI who is the culprit here). AI shouldn't be able to write complex logic by itself. If anything, the developers will have smarter help while coding (for example, better IDEs that predict the next line of code while you focus on the logic).

It won't be that simple. Besides, the professions will evolve - become more complex. The best will always survive, but it will be harder for the ones starting out or similar.

E.g. - if a pilot is not needed on the plane anymore and the aircraft can be controlled from the ground, there will still need to be someone managing and maintaining that device. No one would do that better than the pilots themselves because of the expertise - only now they'd have to learn extra stuff.

AI can probably outperform lawyers today in most tasks. Obviously not walking into a court and representing clients physically, but researching precedents, assessing the risks of different strategies, even developing the strategies used in cases holistically using reinforcement learning to optimise it, that's all possible today.

Once CGI and similar become good enough to convincingly use a computer-generated actor, they'll be able to make decisions about the way that they deliver lines, the characters they create, and their own appearances after feeding the script and a lot of other data into them.

They won't be the first professions to be optimised with AI, but they'll be on the cards for sure.
 
Not me but I did mention that the guy surely is serious about those professions being taken over from AI

Everything is possible but it would take decades as being an actor or a lawer needs "emotions" .

Doctors : 1st world at least - If Elon's neural net implant works correctly, then as all body functions are monitored by the brain. The neural net will first attempt to cure a problem, when the cure is established that will be fed back into the central AI data base and be used to cure the same problem on any human/animal with he implant. But the scary part is, if you have the implant while still a fetus (which is possible) basically you will never need a doctor for the rest of your life. And you will never need a surgeon, if Elon's reset system also works with the neural implant then all thoughts will be translated into code. And if you hare injured/killed it will be easier just to make a clone (the neural net has your full DNA coding) and restore the neural implant data from a backup. Which of course touches on the the theory that we are a brain in a bathtub replaying an old memory.

Lawyers : I dont know, I assume that if you have every law and every verdict of a prosecution or transaction etc ever recorded, the AI will use that to make a determination of guilt or adjudication of argument?

Ship/Aircraft Captains : That's nothing new , most ships are piloted via computer/GPS and Radar. In fact the large freighters use a wind and current algorithm that can actually save fuel and speed up the journey.
Aircraft even commercial couriers like UPS have been using pilot-less freight aircraft between their private airports in the US. Pilot error is the number one cause of accidents in aviation, so AI could decrease fatalities.

Actors : I think this comes from the idea that AI could produce films that look like real people and places but are in fact just generated special effects. The Japaneses are trialing computer simulated manga and voices asking the audience which were real actors voices and which were not. As for theater performances, AI generated again but using holograms.

We have to accept that as a species we have continuously evolved. The merging of AI and humans is inevitable, not just for our mental and physical development. But because it will become essential for our very survival as a race.

When....is actually when though? Yes, there has been a lot of progress, but it is far from true AI, more ML..I mean show me one true AI that applies transfer knowledge? All right now are trained for specific tasks, and even if its a simple scenario that was not thought of before it could not perform the same action a 5-year-old could do.

- Remember the dilemma for AI self driving? Which life is worth more to save? Pedestrian crossing the road randomly or the passengers in the car?
Without knowing what they chose to do I'd rather not hop in. You can assume that every normal driver prioritizes their own life in events such as this.

I think a long way to go on this before it becomes something to discuss.

This is a good point, but most people assume that AI lives in a server somewhere in LA., which of course is roughly true.
What if we as humans already posses AI?
AI not in the respects of Artificial Intelligence but Accelerated Intelligence ?
For instance, for me to reply to TheVigilantes question I had to type the answer out, which took maybe 10 mins.
What if I could transmit the answer back to him in 100th/sec ? Including pictures videos sounds or even smells (were applicable).
That would be an increase of data transfer speed (which is what we are doing here) of 60,000 x's faster.
So what you have learned by reading my reply could be multiplied 1000 x's in the same period.
We have the ability to mentally solve problems and imagine at the speed of light - what if AI tech was simply the bridge between our thoughts and communicating them to others?
That would solve the driving of cars or anything, we still drive it but the AI bridges a small amount of a cognitive function via the feedback from its sensors and we make determinations based on experience. It would be like seeing your 2nd PC monitor out of the corner of your eye and reacting if it starts blinking red.
All possibilities - nothing proven yet lol

One of the most interesting comments I've read in a long time.. the potential for AI still outstrips most (if not all) other emerging techs at this point. It's just in another league of it's potential to reshape the world (us and the non-us world).

This is a super good point too. AlphaGo beating Lee Sedol was an amazing achievement, but it was really just a very complex neural net practicing playing Go a stupidly large number of times. If you got that AI to put sugar in a coffee it would be hopeless to begin with.

This touches on the oldschool impression of AI (an artificial mind/body that is comparable to a human) against the newer realisation (hyper-focused and specific task completers).

It's interesting to think though that something like self-driving cars are just a powerful collection of task-specific AI components, and when they're added together with some sensors for perception they can replicate a complicated process like driving, including being adaptable.

Maybe with enough time and development, the evolution of simple task completers and their combination together to form more complicated applications will be the way that we eventually approximate the human mind.
 
I even doubt about drivers. Pretty sure it's not possible to develop AI driver that can drive in snow, fog, rain, storm etc.
At the end of the day it's programmed by humans and personally human touch is very much necessary
