Hi, my account was created a few years ago but for all intents and purposes I am new here, so hi!
I’m here to learn more about all types of SEO. I have a day job as an editor and writer for a large website with millions of visitors per month. The site does not really have its SEO game on, but ranks well for some keywords nonetheless. After years of being stuck in the same role with that job, I have decided to start building my own websites in my spare time. I have the nice bonus of having unfettered access to my employer's database of ~20,000 high quality articles, so I can build a few nice backlinks to all my sites from there. But of course that's not enough.
I have a personal blog that I’ve run for years and I got it to a 36 DA with very little effort and no intentional backlink building at all except from my employer (similar niche). I’m now building two affiliate sites. I found my way here because one of the sites needs to rank quickly as the products are timely. I’m trying to figure out the safest way to get the traffic I need. I know the money will be there if I just get the rankings.
In trying to get that website to rank, I have noticed some of my competitors, large publications including Vogue and Self magazines using all kinds of shady-looking backlink strategies, along with a share of quality links of course. But I haven’t been able to figure out exactly how they are obtaining the high volume of lower end backlinks, so I came here to find out. It seems like they are posting essentially the same article to lots of Blogspot blogs and other lower end sites. I don’t understand why they are not getting dinged for duplicate content. So I haven’t found my answer yet… But I’ve learned a lot of other things here, so I’m glad I returned.
