Could I ask, and sorry if this is basic but do I take the pictures with a camera (can I use my phone camera on a samsung 8 for example?) and then photoshop onto a white background? Or just place it on a white background from the start?

If you think your photoshop skills are good enough to do it, you can do it for sure. But I advise you to place it in a white background, that way you save time and there's no margin to make a mistake photoshopping.

iPhone camera is good enough, but if you have a camera go for it.

In the end, the format of your picture will be the same to upload to the store or social media. You just need to pay attention to the dimensions of it to make sure it will not lose quality.
