Professional Competition and Google Ranking

I work for a medical office and was wondering how and what is the best way to rank higher in the search engines such as google, yahoo etc. than our local competition.

For instance if you google medical doctor and our city several listings come up with the different medical doctors in our area.

I would like to know how we can rank higher than our local competition, is there a software to analyze their keywords, descriptions, etc. so that I can add these same things to our site as well.

1. use your keyword in the title, headings and descriptions.

2. build backlinks (for example with social bookmarking or submitting your site to directories)

Try to contact other sites for a link exchange. If they know nothing about links you hit a pot of gold

what type of search terms are you looking to target and i will take a quick look for you and see what you need to do help your rankings...

i think he's talking about the Google Local Listings ( with google map next to those listings )
a couple days ago i tried to search for some information about the local search listings but sadly haven't found anything valuable
