Hey guys I haven't kept up with the SEO scene over the past couple years....working on a ecommerce site where I'm importing products into a site with canned descriptions...

Question.....How much of the description do I need to change so I don't get a duplicate content penalty on that page or the page get slapped for having a duplicate description as other sites?

So my products page wont get ranked lower if I have duplicate content in my descriptions?

Doubtful your site is good enough to knock down the hundreds of other vendors using the same product descriptions, but nope, no duplicate content penalty. There is no such thing. It's one of the shitty rumors you read on sites like this.

However, make a site that's "just like everyone else" and it's doubtful it will be successful.

Not making a site like everyone else.....just didn't want a product description from a supplier (that is getting uploaded in bulk) to hurt my site or hurt that products page chances of ranking on a long tail keyword perhaps....

If there's enough content on that page, leave the description blank. Google will show the most relevant content from your site according to the corresponding search query. Only reason to ever have a static description tag is, if the page has no content. OR if you want a specific description (mostly home pages). That never guarantees Google rendering that description in the SERPs though.

Well....not really what I think your thinking of....its on an ecommerce site...physical products and a few thousand items in the store.....each product page will just have a title, price picture description and mayeb some reviews....not much else...I can edit any of these if its necessary though....
