Procrastinating About My Cold Calling

Hi fellow BHW members

I'm currently cold calling, or atleast supposed to be, and I know that it is the right thing to do to progress my life and financial status, but I'm just feeling demotivated because I've got to get past the gatekeeper and then im nervous what im going to say to business owner. The product is good and will help them

Can someone give me some advice, for a beginner marketer.
I really want to do this but im struggling

prepare and practice your rebuttals in advance...meaning u should imagine every excuse they will give you and have a few responses for each prepared and practiced in advance. this gives you some confidence and may be what u need to start.

it's a numbers game, each call u get rejected means you are 1 call closer to the yes

Keep dialing...and if you are able, use a targeted list.

Other than that, read up a little, try different approaches, always speak conversationally, and relax...they are just people like you.

Role play can be very effective, especially if done with someone that has a good business mind or is in a related market. Do it often enough and it is like a muscle memory when you start helping/pitching your client

I Cold Call every day. I have been cold calling for going on 15 years. I have run sales floors of 200+ telemarketers. You know what? Cold calling still scares the sh*t out of me sometimes. How do I overcome this fear? I just pick up the phone and smile. Just take action. Don't analyze, don't procrastinate. The fear of cold calling comes from anticipation. Do not give yourself the time to anticipate the outcome. Just pick up the phone. The longer you wait, the heavier the phone will become until you completely talk yourself out of it.

You will say something stupid. You will fumble over your words. You will blank out. You will hear no. You will get hung up on.

Look up the definition of the word "Courage". It is the ability to DO something that frightens you. Not the absence of fear. You are already braver than 90% of the population who will not even consider cold calling.

Start easy and build up your confidence. Commit to a number and hit that number. Commit to just 10 calls tomorrow. Just 10 Dials. Do not worry about the outcome, just make 10 dials. Then 15 the next day. Then 20 dials. Then double it. Do this until you are making 100 calls a day.

Some quick tips:

• Don't call asking if they need your services. The answer will always be NO.

• Call with a solution to a problem or a clear benefit to the business. If you had a cure for a cancer, and you had a list of people with cancer would you hesitate to call them and tell them about your solution? No, you would consider it your duty and obligation to call them. It is your duty to help that business drive more revenue.

• Use Bullet points but don't read a script.

• Speak up, literally shout.

• Stand Up.

• Use a headset so you can move around and use your hands. (*do not use this as an excuse if you don't have a headset)

• Smile. You will sound more confident.

• Ask questions, let them talk themselves into a sale.

• Have a clear objective. The purpose of the first call is not to get the sale, its to get the appointment (either face-to-face or in person)

This is so true! A trick I learned is to keep a mirror on your desk to remind you.

Be careful with that, you can come off creepy sounding...just be natural, smile when you would normally smile and talk or be serious when you would normally do that.

Do this:

Say "Our service supplies you with everything you'll need to reach your customer base."

Do it with a smile...

Then do it in your NORMAL voice/tone...which one SOUNDS less fake? Use that one.

cold calling is a difficult thing to do. keep your head up!

My first lucrative job involved cold calling people. It really helps if you write a script that you want to go through. Also you should essentially go right past the gateway person. Find the person you are looking for online and just ask for them directly. In your script you should also have the objection rebuttals written down. Just be prepared.

About procrastination.. Stop thinking about it. I used to have this problem and even though I still do it sometimes I am a lot better than I used to. Just take a deep breath, clear your head and PICK UP THE PHONE.

Good thread. I'm at the point where I need to start doing this myself but have no experience what-so-ever, can't afford to call in a sales guy, so I guess its pick up the phone and see what happens. Maybe finding one of those compnies who use to call me trying to sell databases

IMO Cold calling is a lot harder than walking in face to face cold. Face to face produces a higher landing % as well. Have you tried it?
