I have reached an agreement with a private individual to purchase their site.

I just wanted to cover myself so I don't get scammed so I want to know how to do this.
In the past i've just bought expired domains which have been pushed over to me, so i'm not sure how this works.

From what I know, I send the money via escrow.com or paypal and then wait for the guy to push the site. Is there anything more than this or any ways he could try and scam me that I need to be aware of. For example, I pay, he gets funds and then finds a way to recover the site on his end claiming it was hacked, etc.

The price is in the 4 figure range, so nothing huge, but obviously I want to take precautions.

It depends on how much you are paying and where you are from, but to ensure you either get the site or your money back in most countries you are best purchasing anything online with your credit card.

Then if they do nio deliver you just issue a chargeback and it becomes the cc company problem.

Yes, you will use 3rd party for processing the payment.

In the expired domain seller just pushed the domain and that's it. But here you will get the Wordpress login to access the site, After accessing the site, change the login details. And take a backup because your site is still using the seller's hosting.

After that change the hosting too, so the seller won't access your site from anywhere.

You won't get scammed with escrow.com

Once you send the cash the buyer has to transfer the domain + content, so when you setup the escrow transaction, choose the domain and content option.

Transfer the domain to your registrar and have them migrate the site over to you.

There is nothing he can do once it is transferred, and nothing you can do either since the $ will go to him.

Use reputed escrow and you will be safe. Regarding checking site stats, that depends on how experienced you are.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I used escrow and it went quite smoothly.

For some stupid reason though, the guy transferred me the domain name and then went afk for around 3 days without migrating the site, so there was a lot of needless downtime, but nothing I could do. I wasn't worried, just annoyed.

Congratulations on the sale!

What percentage went to fees? I've been looking for a good alternative ever since Dan raised their fees.

I think I paid $5k for the site and then I paid around $160 in fees to escrow and another $150 for using paypal.

These numbers aren't exact but you get the picture.

Incredible. You'd be looking at on 15% minimum on any of GoDaddy's platforms.

Thanks for the reply!

Doubt an anonymous person agrees to sell anything for credit card especially if they are not a business

If you are selling something you are in business.

Most of the shitlists on here that dont end well, are because people paid using crypto and discussed everything on telegram.

The safest way for a buyer is pay with a credit card and get the sellers details.

You are asking for trouble if you buy from an anonymous person and pay in an anonymous way.
