Problem with membership sites.

you could tier the level of membership and the content they can access, ie they start on level 1 access and get access to level 1 materials, when they get put on level 2 access and get access to level 2 material and so on...
you would change their level of access either by receiving subscription payment or do a timed chron job so as to automate the process...

It depends on what you're offering but you could offer it in a drip-feed/incremental way so that they need to be a member for x days/whatever before they see it. A lot of membership scripts have this now (memberwing, wishlistmember, amember etc)

I honestly think that it goes with the territory. You charge to admit them to the site. I think it's fare that they have access to everything after paying their money.
I think to keep them, you should entice them to stay a member each month by getting new information that they will want.

I was subscribed to a lot of membership sites inside internet marketing niche. I think the only way to keep them subscribed for long time is good content. You can protect your website in any way you want... if your content is not good they will go. That is for sure. Today I'm member of only one paid membership site. I stayed subscribed for years (they charge $47 per month) because of good content. So, to get them and keep them, you need great and not just good content on your membership site.
why not drip feed them the information via email, this way they can get access to the last 10 give aways etc on the site itself, but make sure to drop them 2-3 emails a week and that way they have to stay as a member to get everything. Im setting up a similar site at the moment and it was the only way around it i could think of. hope it helps

Just lock the previous month content. If they want it they have to pay extra.
