Hey guys, I've been hearing about press releases more and more lately. How do they perform?

I surmise it'd be not be too effective since places you can get it will likely be giving away many anyway, so google probably doesn't give that much of a shit about these sites. Am I right?

Websites do press releases for their websites, mainly in order to help their online reputation. It also helps in SEO due to the backlinks, which may be from high authority press related websites, in certain cases.

Press release is not for the backlink (+ it's generally no follow) but for the awareness of your brand mostly, can get a shit ton of traffic that way.

In my opinion, a press release is effective for SEO.

Depends on what your end goal is.

Can be useful for a wide variety of things ranging from SEO improvements all the way to artificial reputation enhancement (Social verification, inflated perception of company value etc...)

If done correctly and circulated in the right manner then they are incredibly effective not only for creating a buzz for a product launch or event, but backlinking to a main site is very effective.

It's mostly for traffic and not backlinks. Backlinks like said above are mostly nofollow plus duplicate content on most release sites. High authority sites with good traffic might send some to your website but that is that. It's done mostly by ecommerce companies or media companies.

For eg : Doing a press release at time of holiday for extra traffic on your ecommerce site will work well.

PR is mainly done for traffic, reach and increase exposure for your business. If done on right sites you will rank instantly on Google/ Bing.
