I would segment my customers and then go from there. Are your buyers male/female, rich/poor, young/old? (These are just some examples, add to them as you see fit).

You see people who are rich (comparably) will be more interested in quality than in saving money. Older people are in general are concerned about keeping what they have, so for them use the word "Protect" i.e.: your house, financial situation... Poor want to save money. Yes there are always exceptions but this stays true a lot of the time.

Figure out who you are selling to, then adapt as such.

Good tips theodorf. Your mention about using particular words reminded me of a great book "Words That Sell" by Richard Bayan, which can be purchased for just a few bucks on amazon. It should be on every marketer's shelf as it guides you on the particular action words that you should be using according to the audience you're targeting.

A book like cashvertising will help you better at writing copy towards your audience.

"Selling Anything to Anyone"?

A little modesty and moderation in claims wouldn't hurt the acclaimed author. (what a marketing vampire that guy must be)

Mike.

haha modest marketing guys tend to be few and far between!

Another great book on the subject would be Ken Evoy's "Make You Words Sell": a true classic from a fine gentleman.

Indeed, most regular marketers feel that unless they are actual copywriters, they don't have much to gain from studying marketing and psychology texts. But even getting your hands on a couple of basic books, including the ones mentioned above, can transform the way you go about IM and pre-selling especially.

I would like to add for the sake of any person who's also interested and reading this thread - plain text links with an engaging anchor work 1000x better than fancy buttons

Agree with regard to most cases.

It's true in the same way flashy/sophisticated banners often convert poorly compared to plain textual ads (with one enticing image which invokes curiosity) .

Mike.

When it comes to banners, we have found that ones making a controversial/unexpected statement work best.

You can see this particularly in most weight loss ads out there - they all say things along the lines of "never do this one thing", or "1 weird tip for weight loss" etc...
