I found a website that is ranking for spot 3 on page 1 without any backlinks and with thin content. What can I do to inspect this website to see what he might be up to? It might have something to do with the new Google algorithm, August 1 update.

How competitive is the keyword?

I'd say his competition is in the medium range, people around him have either a few thousand backlinks or a few hundred. Some people that rank on page 3 for this competitive keyword have over 3000 words of content. However, that content is pretty close to meaningless because all the websites are trying to sell a service similar to the keywords "web design for dealerships".

What did I do to spy on his website?

So far I have used SEMrush, Ahrefs, Spyfu, and Magestic. They all show no backlinks. His front page that is indexed in Google has 500 words max. Website creation date was Feb of last year, 2017. Spyfu says he was averaging around rank 51 and started to jump to PR3 in the span of one month, starting on August 1st.

How do I use redirect check to see if he purchased a domain to redirect his website to it?

I never used a redirect checker before so correct me if I am wrong here. The redirect checker I used below showed me no other website address associated with his main domain. The redirect code was 200 and the 301 showed me his main domain in all cases.

What did screaming frog show me?

Only page title contain his keywords. Header tags and descriptions are blank. Keywords do appear in the second header but they are very vague, maybe one keyword for only a few of his tags. He has about 16 pages including a blog, pricing page, and a testimonial page. His testimonial page probably has the most amount of content out of all the pages at about 100 words per testimonial for 6 testimonials.

I'm looking for more ways to analyze his page rank. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

He can hide backlinks in such a way that Ahrefs and other services do not find them.

It is also worth thinking that this is an ordinary coincidence.

you can hide you backlinks in third party tools easily he defiantly hide footprint

There a method that can hide your SEO footprint from any popular tools such as ahref, semrush etc.

Probably he purchased some great PBN services here in BHW and got their footprints hidden :D

There's nothing you can do, except purchasing more PBN than him.

You are getting confused. PageRank(PR) is no longer publicly updated, if a site is ranking in position 3 it does not mean it has a PR of 3

hah, I was just wondering if she had any other tricks up her sleeve. Also, SEMrush says that she started to rank up around July first which is different from Spyfu. I plugged her website into the WayBackMachine to get more details on this person. The first iteration of the website had her Facebook and Instagram account attached. That's how I know she is a female. Also, she is attractive! :D

Now, what I found strange is that the WayBackMachine only shows the first iteration of her website. WayBackMachine made a recording of her website in February but ever since she redesigned the website, WayBackMachine has been unable to take a snapshot of her changes. WayBackMachine has tried to take a snapshot of her website three times in August but has failed all three times. Below is the error code that I receive when I try to look at the website's snapshop in August for all three snapshots.

I don't know if this error code means anything, so I just wanted to put it out here for more ideas.

I probably am. What does PR3 mean? For my situation, she is on page 1 and has spot number 3. The website will jump between spots 3 and 4 every other day. There are also many companies bidding for the keywords. I'm always seeing 4 ads at the top.

Google "pagerank". It was a way to see how valuable a link was.

It ranges from 0 -10. The higher the number the harder it was to get. Only very few sites has a pr 10 like goigle, facebook, etc

If you don't know something use Google to find out

I was thinking about sending her a DM to get more information on how she does SEO or who she paid to do it.

LOL

I think you are trying to boost your count.

So your website is your business would you tell other business your plan or strategy

You think Apple is going to tell Microsoft it's secrets

I was thinking about sending her a DM to get more information on how she does SEO or who she paid to do it.

That would be scary. Better idea would be engaged on her blog with quality comments for next few days. And send her a DM/email to connect after a week. And try not to ask sensitive questions. Slowly dig your way through.

I like this approach. :D
