I noticed in a lot of my niche ranking projects that some of my competitors have basically zero url links, a handful of domain links but a PR of 1.

Initially, that does seem like much competition, but I am finding the PR ranking really holds it spot. I build several hundred url backlinks to my page and then have millions of domain backlinks from the authority page I publish on, but a url PR 0, yet cannot dislodge these guys.

This makes me think PR outweighs links - any truth to this?

How old is your site? Compared to your competition. I have a PR 2 site ranking number 1 vs 2 sites both PR 7 with alot more backlinks than I have. My domain is 10 years old the other 2 are less than 5. I belive my site has googles trust! which I believe is more important than PR or backlinks.

The page is brand new, but built off the hubpages site which is quite old and well established and trusted I think.

Well building too many links won't help IMHO, You need to build links i mean valuable links. . Which google loves, Only then you will get ranked in SERP as well as PR. .

And yeah i agreed that, Google respects old domains with less links. . Because they are looked as a authorized in the eyes of Google. .

Thanks

Page rank is a factor - not the only factor. There are over 200 different variables google looks at to determine your SERP.

I've found in my own experience that article marketing (publish to blog and then to the article directories - no spinning, no spamming etc.) will help with pagerank if you're a semi-decent writer.

Eventually - a well written article gets PR juice from being highly ranked in Ezine or somewhere else and that backlink juices your domain.

Also - submitting to the various directories (legit ones - not the spammy ones) helps.

I can easily spin up a new domain and get it to page rank 3-4 by doing these two things.

PR does not rule. I beat many sites that are much higher in PR. Backlinks do the job for me along with keywords in title and URL.
