i'm finding a quite a few nice clean pbn domains that dont really tick all boxes.. they are mostly trust flow 10-15 or sometimes have under 10 referring domains..
I'm thinking of just buying them and matching them together if they are nich related. The stronger 1 gets the 301 from the weaker one and i'll build a couple of backlinks as well that i know instant boosts tf

viable strategy? anyone else doing this?

You could try that or you could build a tier 2 PBN and power up the tier 1 PBN with it - that way you could power up more PBN's but it would cause a footprint

I had tried this method in Jan 2015 and it worked for me.. I was able to see a improvement in terms of number of links needed to rank my money sites..

Have sold that PBN last year, so am not sure about the current scenario..

This does work OP, it's also far cheaper than chasing the high DA PA domains and / or buying them off vendors in here.

The trick with lower power domains is to think of local businesses that are dying out, yet would have had some good backlinks when they were thriving businesses.

Top Tip: Look in the hospitality niche. ;)

What works for some doesn't always work for others. So assess your risk and decide from there.
