If I acquire backlinks from the same domain to my page. For example I build backlinks to blogspot.icecream from blogspot.strawberry is this a less valuable backlink then if it came from wordpress.strawberry all other things being equal?

Piratematerial,

The domain by itself really doesn't make a difference. It is the authority of the domain. Each link from another website counts as a vote for the site it is linking to. The amount of authority that site has determines the quality of that vote. If Google perceives a site as having a lot of authority, then a link from that site would be a very powerful signal that your site is important. IF Google considers a site to be of low authority, then a link from that site is not very powerful.

You can read more about this system of ranking websites here,

Hope that answers your question,

Shawn

Good answer content authority the link as well seems useful. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks contentauthority that helps though I was somewhat familiair with PageRank there is still something I don't understand even after reading the wiki. Possibly because I can't follow the math. Though I think I get the idea behind it.

In practice

If i get a PR 3 page on a PR 7 domain to link to me is the value of that link < or = toa PR 3 page on a PR 6 domain that links to me?

I realize there goes more into the value of links then pure PR like the context of the domain and context of the link but let's say they are equal in both examples.

Generally, subdomains are treated as separate entities but there are always exceptions to that. With your example, and I assume you mean strawberry.blogspot and ice-cream.blogspot, you may reach a point of diminishing returns especially if the content is closely related.

Ber that's really interesting. And it wouldn't surprise me if it worked like that. Content is very unique though not similar at all between pages.
