Potential malicious backlink attack against my site, preventable?

So I heard through the grapevine that one of my competitors was talking about paying someone on fiverr to link my site with a bunch of shitty backlinks in order to try and get my shopify site punished by google. I have been looking into it but I can't figure out how to block that or to block him from accessing my site. Is there anyway I can prevent this besides monitoring my backlinks? Even then I woudln't know what to do if he did try and pull this off.

Basically, you can do nothing, just monitor backlinks, and disavow them as fast as possible, but if your site is the authority site, probably those shitty backlinks, will do nothing.

Following. This question has popped up in my mind numerous times and I couldn't help but feel extremely vulnerable. Hope this thread gets more replies.

Soon as you see it jump in with the devil. Disavow them with a note saying it's a continuous thing, someone is spamming you, you don't want credit or penalty for these links. Create a paper trail so if the worst comes tot he worst you can prove to the Google site assessors that you were both aware of it, and tries to stop it and went out of your way to tell them you wanted no benefit from them. IN the end the worst sort of penalties are assessed by real people at Google. Give them evidence that you are not the spammer and took action ASAP. It's a really easy process.
