Posting articles from other sites.

I'm starting a new site and I was thinking about having mixed content, some content I would take from other sites and some articles I would write or purchase. How would that do in terms of serps? what will happen if I take an article from another site and put in on mine in terms of SEO and serps?

not all that well because its not fresh content

ive made the experience (on two off my sites) that there is a big risk that this can crash your ranking.
both sites are very nice white-hat sites with a lot of useful content, ranked constant on the main keywords for years.
after putting 5-10 articles from other sites both sites are fallen dramatically in serps.
i think this is the result of duplicat content because no other on/offpage actions was made.

for wh-projects, the better choice is to let the content rewrite on odesk for a few bugs.

if you do decide to post content from another site make sure you leave
all the links in tact that way it looks like you are using the article as a
reference and not trying to ripp off another site

Rip the article but use the best spinner to make it unique

Only one rule don't use copied content... Now it's up to you either use some cheap rewriting or spinner to make it unique and readable...

You may get penalty for copied content but it's not sure (may or may not be) so it depends upon you... "Are you willing to take risk"

You can take an article from another site and put in on your site on that case you need to give the source url means from where you took the article. For SEO it will treat as duplicate content but if you give the source you would not get harm
