Ok so this has been happening a lot lately... we have a post that goes viral as something is mentioned on tv that relates to our specialty... we have been sitting #1 now for a long time for this post term. all of a sudden the traffic blows up to like 5000 users at any given time... 10 minutes later we get bumped from #1 to like 3 or 4 and now in the #1 and #2 spots are crap sites that can not even handle the traffic (getting too many requests or page cannot be displayed) WTF G00gle? I thought you want a good user experience... Seems to us every time something goes viral all is good on our site as we have huge servers that can easily handle the requests but all of a sudden we get bumped down a couple spots when something goes viral?

Anyone have any ideas at to wtf?

Also, part 2 of this rant: About a week ago we did have a server issue and went down for about a day... we realized that we had a opening in our theme/wp install we were using that was allowing a mysql hack attack, (it was not reported or reporting in google, we caught it very fast) anyways, we wiped the server, went with a new better, faster, lighter more secure theme. We did have a bout 200+ 500 errors in GWT but all was fixed within 12hrs (no pages were de-indexed). But now for over a week we have lost all of our internal pages rankings that we had. We had several posts on page 1 sitting 1-3 now the posts are all at the bottom of page 1 if at all.

Anyone have any ideas on this wtf?

    Thanks Mates!

Typical. G lets you taste free traffic and now they want you to pay if you want more.

Something similar happened once or twice with me; normally the rankings return to what it was within a week or two?

It would seem that G00gle is very fast to catch something like this, and demote you, but they take their sweet time to promote you back to where you were?

Yeah, it is weird the main page ranks just fine for a very competitive term (up against wiki, imdb, rotten tomatoes) and I am right up there with them but the internal pages are just horrible most not even on the first page. I guess just need to give it more time... losing money sucks lol

Been about 2 weeks now still no love for the internal pages... the funny thing is we are a PR4 PA56 DA44 with a pretty strong link profile over 1M links and no crap links following Google terms as best we can. All content is handwritten legit with lots of user comments on every single page. I think out of 350 posts we have in the range of 5000+ comments. The site is clean loads in under 1.5 seconds, mobile friendly etc etc... The main page is fine rank wise but still no ranking on the inner pages like we had before we had server issues and went down for a half day and had to also change our theme after cleaning the server. lol Driving me nutts!

Im not sure that the viral post was the culprit for your site.

A panda update has been rolling out, alot of people noticed it on the 2nd. So you might have been hit by panda.
