I haven't bought any in almost 2 years but one of my sites was hit in January(9th) and May, if that's the case I imagine if they go after links, they go as far back as possible. All my preliminary analysis lead me to believe that's the case. I'll do a split test, I'll disavow all links for half of the posts that lost ranking and keep the other half as is. Time will tell if it works or not.

No, in my niche terribly spammy sites with PBN and weird niche edit backlinks are at the top and haven't moved down with this update. In fact, looks like it's a pro-PBN update.

Maybe some Google's employees have a side job in selling backlinks.

Or what if Google knows that some people will never buy their ads under any circumstances and sells backlinks and SEO services to them under other names just to earn as much as it can?

Google hires click workers from India to "rank" sites.
This feeds the "AI".

They rate their own circles high, rank strong American webmaster sites low.

We all lose.
Top sites are all spun copy paste 10 best non-Egnlish translated trash now.

An act of economic terrorism.
