Positions 2-4 safer than #1?

What you guys think about that?

I was / I am still ranked in medium & high competitve niches. Its just a question of time when some clueless children trying Neg. SEO to hurt my sites. Isn't it much safer to stay away from #1, but to have a decent ranking which still gets you lots of traffic?

Not really, if you are near the top you will be a target, not just if your're #1.

But I don't know your situation, this is something you will have to decide.
 
Just keep doing your own thing and don't worry.
If you think people are doing negative seo, then disavow etc is your friend.
 
obviously, I think it depends on your niche... I have one site that actually made more money what it ranked number two - three compared to when it was number one. If you are selling a product or service through that site, you should still get a good number of clicks because people often like to compare the top offers. Whether or not that translates into having your site blasted with negative seo, depends entirely upon the type of people behind the other sites on the first page. This is why, if you can afford to do so, it is worth having more than one site for a moneymaking niche.
 
I heard that most of the traffic comes from rank #2 compare to rank #1
 
Being on #1 is 100 times better than being on #2 or #3.
I had read somewhere that 60% of the Googlers click on the 1st result and they click on 2nd or 3rd result only if the 1st result couldn't satisfy their needs.
Also, I've seen many sites in my niche which have thousands of adult and spammy links (neg-seo) which are not on the top 5 results, so SERP position doesn't matter, if someone wants to neg-seo your site, they will do it no matter what. Just make sure that you've enough high quality links to nullify the affect of bad links.

No.1 for your main keywords definitely spreads the good feeling by google to other keywords, so you get a sitewide jump in rankings and earnings increase at least 5-6 times than if you are in 2-4 position.
 
There's actually some anecdotal evidence which suggests sites ranking on the first page but below the no. 1 position are more prone to negative SEO. This has to do with the belief that those sites tend to be easier to displace with negative SEO than sites in the no. 1 position, which tend to be "stuck" there.
 
if your position out of sudden goes to #1 from nowhere it can be dangerous, your competitors will definitely study how you get there
 
According to a MOZ study, 89% of all user click organic results and no ads. According to an older Optify study from 2011, 36,1%% click #1 on average. 12,5% on #2, 9,5% on #3 going down to less than 3% at #10. The type of search certainly is important, too, a brand search will often get 90%+ on #1, but the bottomline is: There is no second winner. #2 and #3 certainly get a good share of the traffic, but #1 gets 2-4x the number of clicks.

Edit: These numbers also show that it doesn't really make a big difference if you are ranking on page 2, 3, 4, 10 or 15. Everything beyond page 1 is pretty much the graveyard noone visits. Many people don't even know that there is more than one page of results,

you can never be 100% safe. Sounds like you niches is very competitive if you are paranoid about neg seo. Make sure you don't have all your eggs in one basket. Build a few properties in different niches.
 
#1 is always better than #2, unless #2 and #3 are videos or having better snippet.
 
Don't worry about negative SEO. Its very rarely done well enough to have any effect. And Google is VERY aware of it and making strides against it constantly. Just focus on ranking.
 
Negative SEO is no matter. Continue your ranking process to improve your niches position
 
I've seen few guys trying this for #1, but don't worry.
It is safe and you can gain back too :)
