Position 6 - how to get 1?

Built tons of backlinks and I'm currently on first page, position 6 out of a million results.

What are some other ways to get my ass to the top?

have you analysed your competitor links?Try to get links from places they have got.Also do tell us about the link building currently done in your site.I mean if its angela or link wheels or comment posting etc,.
 
More content tailored to your keyword(s). Backlinks are only a part of the equation, in fact if you have good content you can beat an amazon page that has 1k+ backlinks, even if you have none.
 
So if I were to buy those "traffic service", do they really help boost my rankings?
 
lol...no, those are a waist of time in my opinion. You want quality traffic which will come from marketing and search engines.
Just continue to build those backlinks on authority pages, this is no different than what your competitors are doing, they just have more or better.

Depends on the comptetitors, a lot of competing sites have shit backlinks. Authority backlinks arent necessary but they are definitely awesome :P

i have a similar situation. Rank 5 in the most popular keyword on my niche , 15 times more backlinks from rank 2 , rank 3 and 2.5 times more backlinks from page 4. The very important feature that makes difference IMO is the keyword in the domain and the age of the domain. Those two should be given big importance.
 
Yes, you may want to vary your incoming links around the term your trying to rank for. Make it look natural.
 
Analyse your competitor's backlinks and on-page SEO. Look for an oppurtunity to advance above them - Backlinks, unique content, updated regularly, dmoz listed, h1/title tags etc.
 
backlinks of course very important but make opt-in 100% perfect and it will help you very much:
title
h1/h2
good url
unique content
very high keyword density/also bold text
meta
image alt texts
RSS feed
register domain at least 5 years better 10 years
yahoo directory....dmoz absolutely not important.

if these things are done then go to adwords and think out how you can get PR8 links as much as you want but dont be silly.....make just everyday 5-8 links.

wait 1 month and you will be position 1.
 
Simply make sure your on page optimisation is correct and build more backlinks.
 
I just wanted to add that sometimes you just can't be number 1 for a keyword if your competition is too strong. If you can manage to get to rank 3, that's usually good enough but don't kill yourself for that #1 spot if the competitor has more backlinks than you and especially if he owns "keyword.com"
 
age of domain is a big factor.
IMO if you register that site of yours for multiple years it can help make your site more legitimate in Google's view.

do tell, I would have recommended improving your content strategy, getting some good press releases done and hitting up the whole "Twitter" ranking factors up for some quality bump.
 
never understood why people say domain age is important, for me newer domains actually rank better than old ones.

I don't believe in domain age.

I have several of my sites - they are less than a month old.
I did my method and all of them hit the first page of Google for the keywords I want. And no, it wasn't a Google dance.
 
Change your META Tags, Change your keyword Density to 7%-8.9%, change some content if you can and finally, get more Backlinks as many respectable members have said above :)
