Popular Wordpress themes and plugins?

Im completely new to Wordpress. What the populare themes today, paid or free doesn't matter.

Also after the latest updates, what are the recomended plugins for wordpress and what ones should I avoid?

Welcome to the world of Wordpress! This is a good question. There are tons of great Wordpress plugins but I?ll mention some essential ones to get you started. If you are planning to get the most out of the blogging platform, get the Akismet or Disqus commenting plugins. Both are great for fighting spam comments on your blog. You should also look into a good SEO plugin. I highly recommend either Yoast or SEO Ultimate. Both allow you to easily enrich your pages with keywords and perform other basic and more advanced SEO tasks. I would also get the Google analytics plugin for Wordpress instead of installing code manually.

As far as themes go, it?s really a matter of style and functionality preference. The goals your website will fulfill will determine the theme you choose. You can always modify one of the default themes that are available or that come with the original Wordpress installation.
