SEO is messed up, lots of variables. It also depends on what type of website you want, is it an e-commerce? Is it an affiliate blog? Is it an app-website?
My personal knowledge is about affiliate blogs, i have several blogs and i'm making quite some money with it (40-60k/month) so i think i have enough knowledge on that, some people know even more than i do.
What you need to know is a search engine is designed in order to provide the user with the most relevant results for his query.
Your website (remember, i'm talking about affiliate blogs, not other stuff) has to be perfectly organized (so that the spider-module of the search engine can quickly inspect it), it has to be fast (don't upload 10MP pictures), it needs a sitemap, it needs cache, articles need to target specific keywords, they need to be long enough, they need to be original (no copy/paste)... It pretty much has to be perfect from a search engine's perspective, see the search engine as a very basic AI that decides wether your website is good or not and find a way to please that AI.
All that stuff is what's called "on-site optimization", but there's also something else, which is "off-site optimization", which is basically backlinks. Backlinks are links on other websites that send to your website.
There is a concept that has to be introduced here that is "link juice", link juice is basically "how trustworthy your website is according to Google", and every website has its own link juice.
Being recognized as trustworthy by Google of course plays a huge part in ranking your blog, and you can only get link juice through stuff like domain's age (you can buy old domains if the keyword is correct and already have some monthly visits) and organic clicks, and the other way is backlinks.
There are 2 types of backlinks: "follow" and "no-follow", follow backlinks transfer some link juice to the linked website, no-follow backlinks don't. This means that if a huge blog in your niche gives you a follow backlink your website will automatically look more trustworthy.
Backlinks of course can be bought, but you have to use common sense, a new website is very unlikely to get backlinks from big websites a couple weeks after it's born, and Google is not that stupid to not notice that, and will unrank your website.
This is something like 3% of SEO, if you want to use it for affiliate blogs there's a lot of technical stuff but also a lot of strategy (it's marketing after all), pretty messed up, i wouldn't suggest this as a first business unless you learn and understand very quickly and like this kind of stuff, i've seen people get frustrated out of their minds because of not being "internet smart".
