You'll almost certainly have an easier time marketing locally then online in the web design business. Personally, I only think it's worth the time to go for higher quality business type clients, but it really depends on what your skills are.

Are you better at focusing on a single site and making it great, or do you churn out a website in an hour that you would sell for $60? Neither is right or wrong, but the type of designer you are will decide how you should focus.

Yeah you got some work to do before starting. First, are you design oriented or stronger on the development side regarding e Commerce. What SEO services will you offer if any? Do you have experience in a given industry. Professionals are difficult customers but are always in need of these services. Have you reivewed sites similar Guru.com to get get a sense of pricing and what the competition offers? The point about targetting customers locally is another angle.

    Good luck with your endeavor!

And ditch the paper, so old school!

You need to start getting clients online and offline, wherever they are. At this stage, your challenge is to build a design portfolio and a reputation. Word of mouth is a major source of new clients that is underrated.

As a copywriter, I immediately accepted work in all niches, including some that were very tough for me. I built up a reputation, got experienced, and niches no longer faze me.

Target businesses that don't have websites and make one for them then sell it to them.
