I want to start a membership site/community type of site in the tech niche. I have so much passion for tech.I need your advice on sources to get news (example: techcrunch) where do they get news?I'm just worried abt what to put on the site to make it engaging and active. Also, pls what platform(free or best custom; that can be good for large audience if possible) is the best for a community/forum site or possibly news also. Thanks

Start with Wordpress. There are plenty of membership plugins like S2. Getting news is almost impossible for a small guy. Leakers of info call the big news outlets when they want to leak something. You're forced to rehash the news which nobody will care about. You're better off forming an opinion or finding a better option for making money.

I would agree with BHopkins, have your own twist to the news. Your advise, your input. Become an authority figure not just someone who relays the news.

When you say 'Membership/community' site, I am thinking of a forum.

Maybe a forum/blog combo. You can do this cheap/free by using a Wordpress forum plugin like SimplePress.

You can post articles on your blog, and encourage people to join your forum to comment and interact.
Forums can be great as they get lots of repeat targeted traffic.

I'm also from a tech background. Best of luck to ya.
